Golden globe award 2003

By: ajay pats

This article briefly summerizes fahion trends at golden globe award
I thought for sure that the fashions at this Golden Globes would be far more risky and daring. After the somber award shows of 2002out of respect for the September 11th attacksI thought everyone would want to break out a little this year and show some life. The Golden Globes is the awards show where you are allowed to be a litte outrageous and not get judged on it unless you happen to walk past Joan Rivers, but that can't be helped. It looked like the ladies of Hollywood weren't taking any chances this time around. The fashion was there, but the zaniness and originality was in short supply. Take a look at my breakdown of the 2003 Golden Globes fashions and decide for yourself. The Right Wings of Fashion

Conservatism was the theme of the night as most of the stars wore black. Renee Zellweger, Jennifer Garner, Diane Lane, and Uma Thurman all wore simple and classic designs from Valentino, Dior, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan. Even Jennifer Aniston, who hobbled in right before the show started (her foot was in a cast), was attired in a snappy black suit with an equally snappy black cane. These ladies looked lovely, but their choices were a bit more Oscar worthy than what is usually worn at the Golden Globes. The only actress who had the best excuse in the world to wear black was Catherine Zeta-Jones who is pregnant with her second child. It makes sense that since Catherine is up for an Oscar nomination for playing the sultry Velma Kelly in Chicago she still wants to glam it up without drawing attention to her mid-section. Nicole Kidman didnt wear black, but she still didnt show off her usual fashion prowess with her gray Yves Saint Laurent gown. It had a hint of daring with the flamenco style skirt, but the color was not very inspiring. Had the color been a bright yellow, a deep purple or a flaming red it really would have been a sensation. The Ladies in Red

This is my favorite color so I tend to show favoritism towards anyone who wears it and what a color it is! It is eye-catching, exotic, erotic and any other word that describes visual excitement. No matter where you are if you are wearing this color you will be noticed. I noticed it on four great ladies: Lisa Kudrow, Kim Cattrall, Susan Sarandon and Selma Hayek. Each dress was designed beautifully and each actress wore their dress with a great deal of confidence. They looked good, they stood out and they drew attention to themselves which is exactly what you are supposed to do at these award shows. I give these ladies a great deal of credit for daring to wear red and loving every minute of it.

She Came Out of Left Field

The only person who stood out (from behind Chers shadow) was Lara Flynn Boyle in her tutu costume with strapped up heels. I was shocked when I first saw her in this dress, but the more I looked at it the less it bothered me. The powdery pink material had a kind of hideous beauty to it. The strapped up pink heels showed off her pale skin and thin calves. Her black hair matched perfectly with the silk pink bow tied on top of her head. Her expression had a hint of a smile to it, as if she was daring someone to challenge her fashion choice. Where was Joan Rivers then, I ask you? Where? Maybe Lara was going for the nasty prima donna look. They can now call her The Bad Girl in the Pink Tutu. I dont know too many men who fantasize about tarty ballerinas, but maybe Ms. Boyle has opened up a whole new fetish. My only complaint is that she should have had the dress taken in a few inches at the bust. I hate it when a dress droops at the top for lack of cleavage. All in all, Lara took a chance, and if she was aiming to bemuse and surprise both the audience and the critics then I think she accomplished her goal.

Those Who Tried Something A Little Different

Cameron Diaz in her black mid-thigh Chanel dress with a lace top was a nice change from the monotony of long gowns. Cate Blanchette, one of my favorite actresses, wore what has been dubbed the mosaic dress designed by Valentino. The flowery pattern is a difficult one to wear, but it worked especially well with her pale skin and sleek blonde hair.

The Ones I Havent Quite Figure Out Yet

I am crazy about Debra Messings hair, but I am not so sure about her dress for the Golden Globes. A white Vera Wang creation with a frilly halter top and a long chiffon skirt with a sequined belt. I dont like frills very much, but she has the right body to pull this look off. Im just going to file this one under E for experimenting. Also, experimenting is Kate Hudson in a multi-colored Valentino bohemian dress that is along the same lines of Cate Blanchettes dress, but these colors are much brighter and wilder. Kate is another person who has the body and personality to make this work. The pattern is a bit much, but her fashion choice kept to the theme of the Golden Globes being more hip and more relaxed than other award shows.

There you have it, a new year has begun and the awards season is just beginning. Even though the Golden Globe fashions weren't as exciting as I'd hoped, I know that we are just getting started. There are still SAG, the Oscars and a mulitude of award shows to go. Hopefully, as winter turns into spring, the season and the fashions will be hotter as we go along.
